CD44
CD44 antigen is a transmembranous glycoprotein (80 kDa) antibody that is specific for epitope 3 of the CD44 H molecule. CD44 (HCAM) is a cell adhesion molecule that plays an important role in the cascade of metastasis and progression of human malignant tumours. CD44 antigen is present on T lymphocytes, granulocytes, red blood cells, brain and epithelial cells. The standard isoform, CD44s, are also expressed in a wide range of normal tissues such as tonsil, skin, bladder and cervical squamous epithelium. In breast cancer studies, CD44 expression, as assessed by immunohistochemical staining demonstrated a favorable prognostic factor in patients with node-negative invasive breast carcinoma. Further studies have shown a subpopulation of CD44+/CD24- in breast cancer cells have stem/progenitor cell properties.
