Heat Shock Protein 27

Breast cancer stained with Heat Shock Protein 27 antibody

HSP27 is identical to the estrogen induced “p29” and “24K” protein. Common functions of HSPs are chaperone activity (assist in non-covalent folding/unfolding and assembly), thermotolerance, inhibition of apoptosis, regulation of cell development and cell differentiation. Heat shock proteins are over-expressed in a wide range of human cancers and are implicated in tumor cell proliferation, differentiation, invasion and metastasis. HSP27 expression has been associated with poor prognosis in gastric, liver, breast and prostate carcinomas. HSP27 has also been implicated in resistance to chemotherapy in breast cancer. About 50% of breast carcinomas are positive for HSP27 especially those that are also positive for estrogen and/or progesterone receptor.
